Dyslexia Screening

To screen students for Dyslexia, I use the Tests of Dyslexia Screener (TOD-S). This assessment provides parents and educators with a Dyslexia Risk Index (DRI). This score can guide families in their discussions about intervention and additional testing needs.

Dyslexia screening sessions are 60 minutes and include the student assessment, a written report, and a meeting with the family to discuss the assessment results and my recommendations for next steps.

Comprehensive Reading Assessment

The path to successful literacy intervention, starts with assessment.

This comprehensive assessment is designed to identify gaps in your child’s literacy skills. The goal of this assessment is to inform instruction in the areas of reading, spelling and writing.

My comprehensive assessment starts with a parent or guardian interview and a records review. Parents and guardians can expect to answer questions about the child’s development, school performance, and any family history of reading difficulties. Depending on your child’s educational history, the records review may include:

  • Report Cards

  • Progress Reports

  • Acadience Reading K-6 Scores

  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Scores

  • 504 Plan

  • Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

  • Speech Language Evaluations

  • Occupational Therapy Evaluations

  • Psycho-Educational Evaluations

  • Neuropsychological Evaluations

After completing the records review, I will determine what additional assessments are needed to paint a detailed picture of your child’s reading, writing, and spelling skills. Your child may be assessed for the following skills:

  • Phonological Awareness

  • Phonemic Awareness

  • Rapid Automatized Naming

  • Letter-Sound Correspondence

  • Oral Reading Fluency

  • Nonsense Word Fluency

  • Decoding

  • Vocabulary

  • Comprehension

  • Encoding (Spelling)

  • Handwriting

  • Composition

In addition, your child may be screened for Dyslexia using the Tests of Dyslexia Screener (TOD-S). Depending on the assessments chosen for your child, more than one assessment session may be needed.

Once all assessment components are complete, I meet with you to discuss the results and review my recommendations.

Reading Intervention

My reading intervention services are designed to transform struggling readers, spellers, and writers into confident and capable students.

I start with a detailed assessment of your child’s unique needs, then create a personalized plan to address the gaps that are holding them back. Once intervention begins, most families can expect to see a grade level’s worth of growth in about 16 weeks. Each intervention session is driven by data and focuses on the specific needs of each child.

I use a structured literacy approach that is explicit, systematic and cumulative. Learning is hands-on, engaging, and fun. Students routinely work through activities that strengthen phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students may also work on strengthening their fine motor skills, building handwriting fluency, increasing their knowledge of text structures and the craft of composition.

Each session, students follow a consistent instructional routine that increases predictability and student independence. Hard work is intertwined with word games, language exercises, tactile work, and encouragement to reduce frustration and maintain instructional momentum. All sessions start with a student check-in and a word warm-up before we dive into the day’s work.

Sessions are available in a variety of lengths to meet your families specific needs. For intensive intervention, I recommend your child attend two sessions each week. Sessions are available in-home or virtually.
